Voices and Values in Spanish (B1–B2): A Case Study on Language, Democracy and Identity in Catalonia

Primary Objectives:
Improve communicative competence in Spanish, with a focus on oral expression and reading comprehension.
Understand the political, historical, and cultural context of Catalonia and its relationship with Spain.
Deepen appreciation of Catalan culture and heritage as key values.

Secondary Objectives:
Develop skills to participate in sociopolitical discussions with respect and empathy.
Identify linguistic and cultural elements influencing effective communication in multilingual contexts.
Promote intercultural sensitivity and respect for diversity inside and outside the classroom.

Our courses are highly practical and participatory. We believe that meaningful professional development happens when educators are actively involved, reflect on real cases, and collaborate with peers.

Structure and Schedule

Each course includes 25 hours of training distributed as follows:

– 20 hours of face-to-face sessions, from Monday to Friday from 3.30 PM to 7.30PM, in real education settings.

– 5 hours of independent learning, completed from home before, during, or after the course. These hours are dedicated to reflection tasks, readings, or optional challenges to deepen the learning experience.

Assessment

– There is no final exam.

– We apply continuous, formative assessment, based on daily participation in tasks and activities.

– Trainers provide feedback throughout the course to ensure everyone progresses meaningfully.

Learning Platform

All materials, resources, and complementary activities will be available through our virtual learning platform (Moodle). Participants will have access to all content, which will remain open for consultation and download.

Participants will use:

• Videos and articles about Catalan history, culture, and sociopolitical context to deepen understanding 

• Scaffolding materials and vocabulary lists to support Spanish language learning focused on communication and cultural themes 

• Case studies and scenario-based tasks to develop analytical skills and respectful discussion on Catalonia-Spain dynamics 

• Interactive presentations, Kahoot quizzes, and Jamboard brainstorming for active engagement and language practice 

• Selected readings linking language learning with European frameworks and intercultural education 

• Practical templates for communication strategies in multilingual settings to apply course content

At the end of the course, all participants will receive:

– A Certificate of Attendance for 25 hours, issued by Fundació Universitària Martí l’Humà (FUMH)
